Please respond to each of the following questions in separate posts of 4-6 sentences each. Then respond to two of your peers' comments, for a total of five comments overall.
I'd like you to consider the following:
- What do you think it means when Ms. Best says, "Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had." Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
- Pick one quote from the article and analyze it. Explain what the is author saying and what their statement says about their attitude toward race.
- Do you think this type of study encourages us to becomes more unified or does it encourage us to look for differences? Explain.
I feel that what Ms. Best is trying to say people whether they are darker skin want to know where they came from. For example I’m 3 different races and I act whiter than anything. Doesn’t mean I’m going to cross out my other races. I present myself in a different manner but my skin tone is a bit darker. That’s why I feel people get confuse about me .
ReplyDeleteWhat ms.best means is that even tho racism is over and cultures are starting to mix and accept each other. There are still a lot of people who won’t accept other races. Even if we have made some progress over the past years its still not enough. I agree with Ms.best because you still see a lot of racism around the world.
ReplyDelete“the white women apparently found him attractive, and black would flock to him because light was in back then”.
ReplyDeleteI feel that it was a different generation back then but today both lighter to darker skin is attractive. It’s more how you carry yourself. Women today are more about looks than anything. You might get women that go by personality or even both.
I dissagree on Ms.Best assestment on how much our country has progreesed from racial profiling. In the 1960's we had the colored skin americans drinking out of different fountains, and sitting behind buses. Forty plus years later, we now have an African American colored skin man as a president. I dont think we'll fully progress because our second generation citizens were raised in that era and believe it or not have passed their old fashioned ways to their children. But I also think we have made drastic leaps as a whole in our country.
ReplyDeleteI think Ms.Best is proving a point, in which she feels racism is still an enormous issue in America. Given that having a black president in America is a drastic change, she probably thought that was going to change the majority of people’s ideas about blacks. But somehow, it has not changed so many minds, as we thought it would. People still make race and color a gigantic concern.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the article is interesting because I would like my whole race and what else I am. My race is random because once I say my Spanish part its fine but when I put my polish in it, it throws people off. Everyone wonders where the polish came about. So it kind of makes me wonder.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with what Ms. Best is saying because if a lot of students didn’t want to hear the news about them being a different race then they wouldn’t have done it in the first place. And in all honesty a lot of people that did the test don’t even mind being a different back round then what they assume they are. So in all I think we have grown in a sense that no matter what color or culture you are we seem to be happy if we are different back round
ReplyDelete1. I think Ms. Best means that people haven’t change about what race they really are. Just for the color of your skin doesn’t mean you’re black or white it’s about your race. I feel that Ms. Best want everyone not to make a big deal if they are 30 percent black or 25 percent Asian and they are light skin or black skin.
ReplyDelete“I am 48 percent white –genetically I am, at least, but not culturally. And the fact I’m black is more important, because it’s something I know. It’s who I’m comfortable with, “Mr. Harrison said. From my assumption, I would say Mr. Harrison is a racist black man. He found out, he has a 48 percent white genetic ancestry, and he simply has no interest. He stated “black is more important, because it’s what he knows,” I would say that’s a very close minded statement, he should want to learn what he does not know from the white percentage. What exactly does he mean by “it’s who I’m comfortable with “? So, basically, he would not be comfortable saying he is part white?
ReplyDelete''They dont want to live next to it, but they want to be part of it. Its cool.'' The authors basically is stating that when a person is a fan of a certain something or someone, they dont want to just go with the flow but they actually want to be part of it by emmulating alot of the traits they do because they look up to them as a ''role model.''
ReplyDeleteGood work on question 1 David, Ashley and Javie.
ReplyDeleteJavie, make sure you state what Ms. Best's opinion is before you agree or disagree so we know what it is that you are disagreeing with.
Malissa, I like your response to number 3; be sure you answer the question directly, however.
ReplyDeleteI cant speak for everybody else, but what i have taken out of the article is a sence of unity more towards others. I've never really acted out in ways of judgeing someone by their gender, but i would be lying if I said I didnt judge in my head at times. No matter what though you should judge someone on the way they go about things rahter then what they had no control over by being a certain race persay. Were all equal.
ReplyDelete3.) I believe this is an excellent study because for those who can’t get over the fact that your another color of skin. This really helps us be more unified because maybe there are or there are people who want to be other races and when you find out that you are a percent of something thing else in you then you feel like you would belong in another culture as well.
ReplyDeleteI think this type of study encourages us to become more unified. We should look at our races, and notice we all have somewhat of a mixture. It is completely normal, and we should be thankful to be what we are. We should not, but any race behind because of the color of your skin, or because you feel more comfortable with one.
ReplyDelete2. “I am 48 percent white-genetically I am, at least, but not culturally. And the fact that I’m black is more important, because it’s something I know. It’s who I’m comfortable with,” Mr. Harrison said. He is saying that he is more white than black but he is more comfortable of being black. When some people find out they are another race they don’t get use to saying I’m white and half black. They are use to what they thought of their first races. I think it’s good to be more than one races.
ReplyDelete1: What do you think it means when Ms. Best says, "Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had.” Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
ReplyDelete1A: Well I do agree with this comment he made because everyone seem shocked to find out what other racial background we have in ourselves. But why wait so long to figure it out that what other race we have if it doesn’t matter. Back then we notice that we would take a different approach on this topic because color was a big thing, but now a day’s everyone is treated well and as equal. There been a lot of changes in today world. As Ms Best said “Maybe We Haven’t progressed as much as we thought we had” maybe we didn’t if we still question ourselves.
2: Pick one quote from the article and analyze it. Explain what the is author saying and what their statement says about their attitude toward race?
ReplyDelete2A: “Black People have told me I shouldn’t date white people”. That is direct statement made, to her because white people were not acceptable in a black family. From that period of time a lot of thing changed by a lot and acceptation is everywhere but there a bit of people who don’t or won’t think twice about what they see in people before they judge them by color. What the author is trying to explain is that the statement was meant to be racist.
3: Do you think this type of study encourages us to become more unified or does it encourage us to look for differences? Explain.
ReplyDelete3A: No I don’t think so cause there a lot of people who need to change their mind. Not just one study will make everyone in this world change their idea of what we think of each other. In today world there’s a lot of people who are racist but I guess there some right in this country where people who logic to accept other people just cause of who they are not of their color or nationality.
1. I agree on what Ms Best said,” Maybe we haven’t progressed as much as we thought we had.” For example there is still some racism going on in this world and people. We just don’t see or realize it but there are some things. Another example, why are they are people doing this tests to find out what they are they truly are.
ReplyDelete2. The quote that I pick is “Just because I found out that I’m white, I’m not going to act white”. What the author is saying just basically that she is very proud of her black side. Also that she is not going to change anything about her just because she found out she is 58 percent white. But she knows that it is not bad to be mostly white but she had a different feeling inside of her.
3. I predict it encourages up to be more unified. I think a test should not define us for whom we are. Also, everyone is different and they should be proud either way from where they come from.
I do agree with Ms. Best because as much as time as passed there are still races people in the world hat still live in the pass years. Which I think people should get over it because it’s just skin color and ethnic it back ground
ReplyDelete“Black people have told me I shouldn’t date white people”
What the author is trying to say about is that parents disapprove of interracial dating with different color skins person. Because for them there not good for them. And also because white people discriminate on black people so they don’t their child to associate with them.
This type of studies encourages us to become more unified. Because no matter what paper say that I’m whatever culture or ethnic it back I might have me I’m am what I am and no paper or no one could change that because Imp round of where my family and I come from.
3. These studies encourage us to become more unified, because people want to know what other percent races they are. When they found out they are more than one races they feel happy about it but some don’t like being others races. Mostly everyone is more than one race and we should be happy about it. It makes us find more information about the other race we are. It’s great that we have these kinds of studies that tell us what we really are.
ReplyDeleteSteve, In regard to your answer to question 3, be specific about what you are responding to, does it encourage differences or encourage unity?
ReplyDeletei think what Ms. Best is trying to say is that even tho racism is over in alot of places their is some people who still have those racist feeling towards other cultures.like in today's society racist people might not show hatred or racism towards others because it wont be tolarated like in the past. But the racism still there. Like in the article some parents disapprove interracial dating for their children, that's an example that racism still among us.I agree with Ms Best, rasism has stoped because it wont be tolarated like in the past. But the racism still there. Like in the article some parents disapprove interracial dating for their children, that's an example that racism still among us.I agree with Ms Best, rasism has stopped around the world there is still some work to do.
ReplyDeleteI agree and a disagree with Ms.Best. First of all, I can see that through her it seems that their are some people in the world that still are racist towards others. I think that by her saying that she doesn't think we have as much as we thought from this DNA testing. This significes how people are using this method to make possitive that they aren't mixed with something that they don't want to be which can be considered racism. It seems that people don't feel comfortable with just growing up with their belief from there parents and family. In addition, In the other hand I can disagree with Ms.Best. Personally if someone asked me from school if i would take a DNA test to find out my exact origin I would be more curious and excited to find out if i was a percentage of something else that i didn't know I was. I wouldn't do this to feel more comfortable cause to me i already comfortable with who I am. I would use this to know exaclly where i come from.
ReplyDelete1. Ms. Best is trying to declare maybe people have not grown as much as we have contemplated. I agree with her statement with Ms. Best I believe we progressed to a certain extent however not where everybody wants to be. We still think about how we are different and in reality were more of the same. Do we see each other as categories? Why can’t we see each other as human beings than white black or Asian?
ReplyDelete2. “everyone wants to take the test, even students who think they are 100 percent one race or another, and almost every one of them wants to discover something, that they’re 1 percent Asian or something. It’s a badge in this multicultural world.” The author is saying how everyone students and teachers want to take the test and find out exactly where they come from no matter if they think they are 100 of one race or another. This statement has a positive attitude one toward race it is even said this put a badge in the multicultural world. Which mean even though the teachers or students think they are 100 percent of something they are still interested on finding out if they are 1 percent of something else in a positive manner.
ReplyDelete3. In my opinion I think that this type of study would encourage us to become more unified. This would open up more doorways in people not to look at others a different way. It would encourage to look at others the same as oneself and maybe if the person is interested look into the history.
Why do people, especially in this country, want to know? (2par.1sent)
ReplyDeleteEmma Daly is trying to say is why people in this country carry out wanting to know about whats their Race and Ethnic Relations are.
This country is made up of different kinds of race and culture which other countries cannot say.in addition,People from other countries or even our people cannot really say what race are we. Its more of-if you can categorize Americans as in race what are they?
3.This study encourages us to know how we are not different from race because we have a little bit of something. What the study makes people relies is how we are really different in personality.
